What were the Dragoons.

Post by Flatline78 on Tue Aug 12, 2008 8:45 am

Since I have seen several missunderstandings,about
our faction name both from outsiders and from some of our
members, I think this would be helpfull.

"Dragoon is the traditional name for a soldier trained to fight on foot, but trained in horseback riding and combat also, in use especially during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. During the later 18th century and the Napoleonic Wars dragoon regiments in most armies evolved into conventional medium and light cavalry. The title has been retained in modern times by a number of armoured or ceremonial mounted regiments."

Thank you Flat, now I can just direct people here instead of typing it, I am getting sick of being called a Dragon.

Their's not to make reply,
Their's not to reason why,
Their's but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.

Extract from The Charge of the Light Brigade - A, Lord Tennyson

The Light Brigade consisted mainly of Dragoons, just thought I would throw this in.

I always thought they all died but actually almost 2 thirds survived and they managed to push the Russians back so the charge was successful.
Flash'd all their sabres bare,
Flash'd as they turn'd in air,
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wonder'd:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro' the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reel'd from the sabre stroke
Shatter'd and sunder'd.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

It was a mistaken order that caused them to attack the wrong guns and have to run the Gauntlet. The point is even though they knew it was suicide they still attacked.

Ah Wikipedia always there when you need it Wink
